The Model T Ford Club of Central Florida
January 2005
Dear Model T'ers Everywhere,
"What business are you in, Jack?"
"I'll tell you, but I wish you would keep it quiet. I am selling Fords --
but mother thinks I am a burglar!" (Funabout Fords, By J.J. White, The Howell
Company, 1915)
We all had a great time at the annual Christmas party at Fort Christmas with
good food and a lot of fun playing car games. Next year Marquise is planning
on having some games specifically for the youngest of our members (that's what
happens when you become a grandma!).
During our meeting there was a challenge laid down by no other than Mike Bartlett
to Wally Schneider for a little race at Ormond Beach (the Birthplace of Speed)
to run his latest Model T Speedster "THE Shark" against the "Wally
Mobile T" at the event on January 28th and 29th -- we all look forward to
the results.
We also elected or should I say re-elected our officers for 2005 with Mike Story,
President; Jack Mahaffey, Vice President; Secretary Marquise Patton; and Treasurer
Wanda Johnson. All of the board voluntarily agreed to serve another term and
were unanamously reelected. We appreciate the vote of support and look forward
to an eventful year for us all.
Marquise reported the Model T Ford Club International's January 2006 Installation
Banquet will be on January 26th thru 30th and will be a cruise on the Royal Caribbean
Enchantment of the Sea leaving from Ft. Lauderdale for Key West and then on to
Cozemul, Mexico. 50 cabins have already been reserved and the price starts at
$403 for an inside cabin, $483 for ocean view and $783 for a balcony per person
-- we already have 3 couples from our club signed up, so hurry hurry hurry for
the fun filled T trip!
Our annual car show is scheduled at Jay Blanchard Park here in Orlando, and there
will be no charge to club members to set up a vendor table at the event to sell
spare parts. Also the ladies will be baking some goodies bagging them up and
selling them to raise funds for the club. We also will be selling barbeque pork
sandwiches too. At our next meeting we will be making the final arrangements
for our car show. The car show will be held Saturday, February 26th from 10 a.m.
to 3 p.m. -- please call Mike Bartlett at 407-366-5616 or 407-521-6777 or email
him at TCPORL@bellsouth.net for further information or to volunteer to help in
some way.
At our next meeting on February 21st John Dwyer and Jack Mahaffey will be giving
us a little demonstration, training, and explanation of how to paint your Model
T -- don't forget to bring a pen and pad to take a few notes. And in March we
will be finding out more about how to judge and the judging standards used to
judge cars by the Antique Automobile Club of America's standards by our own Gene
Roy who has a lot of experience and has judged for the AACA for a number of years.
Richard Fortner the Ford Tinkerer Par Excellance' gave us his "Tinkering
Tip" for the month by using a piece of scrap cardboard cut in a pattern
to place on your Model T fender to protect it when you are "tooling" around
so as not to scratch the T. He also showed us a dandy tool he made for removing
split rims from tires with turnbuckle and hooks and rim jacks -- very nice.
Mike Bartlett reported that he attended the car show in Lakeland and took "The
Shark" with 60 to 70 cars and said that a beautiful 1915 Model T couplet
stole the show. Many of these folks will also be at our show in February.
Marquise and Jack Mahaffey presented a computer video show and gave a little
talk about their visit to Henry and Clara Ford's home on the Ogeechee River just
south of Savannah, Georgia. There were many pictures of the beautiful home and
grounds shown on her laptop. It was also a great opportunity for Jack as he had
been in the home when he was a little boy and lived in Richmond Hill, Georgia
-- Jack's Uncle worked for Henry Ford and lived on the plantation in Strathy
Hall which is still standing in the middle of the very prestigeos subdivision.
"The Crankin 'A' Region of Model A Restorer's Club will hold their 10th
Annual Antique Tools Trade and Antique Car show, with proceeds to support the
Pioneer Settlement for the Arts, Barberville, FL on Saturday, March 26th. Last
year we had 1 Model 'T' Vehicle, and it won a prize. We would like to see more
vehicles from the Ford Family's earlier cars entered. In addition to Tools, and
trades and Antique cars, there will also be selected quality crafters offering
hand made articles you'd be proud to take home with you. Keep Crankin and hope
to see you there. Ten ($10.00) entry fee before 11 March, after the 11th, $12.
Registration fee."
We look forward to the next meeting and getting ready for the car show. See
you there!
Mike Story.
