A Sketch of How a Model T-Ford is Driven
By Richard L. Fortner

To Start

1. Pull Hand Brake Back. This applies brakes and disengages the clutch.
2. Thromp (stomp) on all 3 peddles 3 or 4 times. This squeezes oil out of the bands.
3. Move left lever up. This retards spark.
4. Move right throttle lever down 5 or 6 notches. This opens throttle.
5. Move switch to battery.
6. If starting with hand crank, pull choke ring with left hand. Grasp crank with right hand and pull up hard. Don't wrap thumb around the crank handle. If the engine kicks back, you want your hand out of the way of the crank.
7. Move switch from battery to magneto.
8. Place right foot on brake "far right pedal".
9. Place left foot on "far left pedal". Push in half way - mid position. (All the way down would be low, and all the way out would be high.)
10. Release hand brake - "thumb down and inside". Push the left pedal down and the car will move forward.
11. Speed up to 8-10 miles per hour, let the left pedal out quickly into high gear,
and adjust gas lever for speed.

To Stop

1. Partially close throttle.
2. Press left pedal half way down to neutral.
3. Apply foot brake "far right pedal" firmly to stop.
4. Hold left pedal "clutch" in neutral till hand brake is pulled back.
5. To stop engine, open throttle a little-then switch off.
6. Do all of this one hundred times and you will be a T Driver.

To Back Up

To reverse, press left pedal half way down, and press middle pedal all the way down.

Notes

· Drive with spark advanced just short of knock. (Lever down.)
· Retard spark on heavy pull.
· Momentarily slow down by pushing left pedal to neutral.
· Don't advance spark too far or it will stall, backfire and jerking will result.
· Press pedal firmly into low. "No slipping" of bands.
· Speed up engine, and let left pedal out into high gear.
· When using low speed, hold pedal down hard to prevent slipping of bands.
· Slow the car with low gear…Use foot brake (right pedal) to stop.
· When descending steep hills, alternate low, foot brake, and reverse with throttle closed with ignition off. Pedals should be pumped to allow oil in for cooling.
· You can use reverse to slow car, but not for complete stop.
